A teacher can never have too many good books up her sleeve.<br />
<br />
The first is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1937165256/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1937165256&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=liwimrl-20&amp;linkId=442DB2XOP4NHOTKD">The Book Monster</a>:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1937165256/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1937165256&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20&linkId=442DB2XOP4NHOTKD"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1937165256&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1937165256" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></div>
<br />
I love this book because of the fun illustrations. Follow a Book Monster as he eats his way through each genre. It is perfect for younger audiences. My two year old son will sit through this one twice.<br />
<br />
<br />
The second is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0399247491/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0399247491&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20&linkId=ADDXKT6KTIT6BAWP">The Incredible Book Eating Boy</a>:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0399247491/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0399247491&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20&linkId=7CH7OFUAFOQZAH6T"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0399247491&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0399247491" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
</div>
<br />
I found this one on a list off of pinterest. Henry loves books so much that he eats them. As he eats he gets smarter and smarter. Until he eats too many books and everything gets jumbled. The last couple of pages were my favorite. A great book to introduce children to reading at the beginning of the year. I checked it out from the library and shared it with my son. It is probably intended for a slightly older audience. (6+)<br />
<br />
Do you have any favorite reading books?Mrs. Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18420914503608188696noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-516452876454239228.post-40081654565347071992015-02-23T16:00:00.000-08:002015-02-23T16:00:06.422-08:00Colorblindness and EducationIt's hard to believe it's been a year since I last wrote. Life as a mom is a crazy, busy and thrilling adventure. My life has shifted so much in the past couple of years. I no longer learn in a classroom, but through out every day life. I continue to frequent the library and am a voracious <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/2742832-madison">reader</a>. I look forward to the time that I can return to the classroom, but until then I do my best to keep my mind sharp.<br />
<br />
I'm part of an excellent book club, that challenges me to read things outside of my comfort zone. It encourages me to read non-fiction in areas I would not normally choose. This month we are reading, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1595586431/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1595586431&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20&linkId=NFQMN3X5B644OY7C">The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness</a>. Have any of you read it? It was written in 2010 by Michelle Alexander. Alexander is a civil rights advocate with a long history in law.<br />
<br />
The premise of the book is that our prison system and the war on drugs are the new <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Crow_laws">Jim Crow laws</a> of our time. It was a fascinating book and made me think back to my diversity classes at college. <br />
<br />
One of the ladies in my group shared this video. When I taught my class was predominantly Caucasian with a small percentage of Latino children. I never had any disciplinary problems, but I taught younger kids. Have you run into issues like this?<br />

<br />
<br />
Do you have conversations about black history month? I looked at <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/PreK-12-Subject-Area/Black-History-Month">TPT</a> and <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/browse?keyword=black%20history">TN</a> for resources for black history month and realized there are very few resources that highlight modern people. Do you bring up situations like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Michael_Brown">Michael Brown</a>? I realize that is a hot topic right now, but I would love to hear how others are teaching about Black History Month.Mrs. Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18420914503608188696noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-516452876454239228.post-45773379543620686942014-01-20T14:30:00.000-08:002014-01-20T14:30:01.553-08:00Smartest Kids in the WorldI love to read. I mainly read YA books, but occasionally a book will grab my attention and force me to pick it up. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1451654421/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1451654421&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">The Smartest Kids in the World: And How They Got That Way</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1451654421" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> was one of those books. I was intrigued to learn what new idea was being shared about education. Because lets face it, there is always a new "expert" with an idea on how to fix the system.<br />
<br />
While I don't consider Amanda Ripley an expert I found her ideas interesting. The book follows three American teens doing study abroad in Poland, South Korea, and Finland. I found the insights into three different countries education systems fascinating. Ripley uses anecdotes from interviews to demonstrate the different countries school cultures, strengths and weaknesses.<br />
<br />
Ripley used her observations of the three countries and the students home schools to hypothesize about the education system in the United States. She theorized that Americans lack standardized curriculum, wide engagement, academic rigor and highly qualified teachers. The over focus of sports and testing in schools was also discussed.<br />
<br />
While her anecdotes and research method's aren't the strongest, her book still made me stop and think. The <a href="http://www.corestandards.org/">Common Core</a> is being rolled out to fix the curriculum problem, which should help ensure students are learning the same thing across the country. This standardization should help with the next two problems, engagement and academic rigor. It is hard to engage students at all different levels and abilities. If students have the same foundation to build on the teacher can continue to expand and deepen their knowledge.<br />
<br />
Teachers play a huge role in the engagement and rigor as well. Did you know Finnish teachers get their masters in a subject before they start a teaching program? Teaching schools in Finland have extremely high standards and take serious effort. While I don't consider my time at school becoming a teacher a cake walk I think I definitely had an easier time. I wish that my schooling had been more demanding and informative.<br />
<br />
I'm not saying I wish I took more tests. I believe I took enough of those. I just wish that the tests I took were used more effectively. Testing and preparing for tests takes up a huge amount of American school time. In South Korea students study hard because they know that their final test determines their livelihood. South Korea education is based not on genetics, money, athletic skill or location, but on merit.<br />
<br />
Ripley ends her book with these questions:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Ask the students you observe, "What are you doing right now? Why?"</li>
<li>Ask parents, "What are the schools weaknesses? How are parents involved?"</li>
<li>Ask the principal, "How do you choose your teachers? How can you make teachers better? How do you measure success? How do you make work vigorous enough?" </li>
<li>Ask yourself, "Am I an educational coach or a cheerleader?"</li>
</ul>
<br />

After discovering my local library had a copy of the book I placed myself on the waiting list. Once it arrived I found myself drawn to reading it. (<i>This is difficult because my six month son is a little demanding at the moment. Any moms out there have advice for getting a little one to sleep through the night?) W</i>henever I got a chance I would read a couple of pages and think about what was written until I got a chance to continue reading.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijgdqTkxjuHP3eVzLO678hdESZNeNIaPI-MeEwiq4S9i-KilWNUcmL69h3jL7atmnjQWCQdql7vhX2cgt4cjIORrSrUPUXmc_Bimx7D0l6xdBjUiOu0kJyQ1QEKy4ODvArwwD8h7QcNvzf/s1600/Einstein-Never-Used-Flashcards.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijgdqTkxjuHP3eVzLO678hdESZNeNIaPI-MeEwiq4S9i-KilWNUcmL69h3jL7atmnjQWCQdql7vhX2cgt4cjIORrSrUPUXmc_Bimx7D0l6xdBjUiOu0kJyQ1QEKy4ODvArwwD8h7QcNvzf/s320/Einstein-Never-Used-Flashcards.png" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Right now there is a very strong emphasis on parents and teachers preparing children to compete in a global market. Children are encouraged to <b>memorize, read</b>, and <b>study</b> before they enter preschool. Children is school are losing valuable recess time to teach all the material on the big tests. Play is structured instead of inspired. Students are having to deal with large loads of homework and extreme pressure.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20data-pin-do=%22embedPin%22%20href=%22http://pinterest.com/pin/44543483787250829%22%3E%3C/a%3E"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNXVJ3NJwXX8PQW_Y4Ubzu2WLgLfeNmUTF1l-snF7fxwXNofSLVdqfEXr11QW0VD1BBEJiYyYnwrLTkjFCT3NnH4RStA8O4evNFeHJhHHZ3Fke3_4yPHk1rxC2-C3ih8hU5ZVJunbVmiBj/s320/Screen+Shot+2013-05-25+at+11.52.57+PM.png" /></a> </div>
<br />
The myth that we need to be preparing our children from the womb to compete is invasive. My son is six months old. I've had early childhood training and even I was buying into the idea that I was failing him by not breaking out flashcards and instructional toys. This book calmed my fears.<br />
<br />
Parents do not need to spend a boatload of money hiring tutors, buying the latest toys and videos, scheduling their toddlers for absurd classes, or sending them to advanced private schools. Parents need to spend time with their children playing. They need to give them unstructured time to play alone, with other children, and with adults who will raise their play to a higher level.<br />
<br />
The authors explain recent data and studies and how play benefits children in educational, social, and emotional ways. They provide small experiments you can complete with your child. Reading this book is already impacting how I interact with my son. I can't wait to apply more ideas from the book once he gets a bit older.<br />
<br />
What do you think? Is play being pushed aside in favor of academics? Do you still have recess?<br />

Baby K keeps me so busy that somehow it is already the 16th. How did that happen?<br />
<br />
I couldn't let another day go by without jumping on board for <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2013/03/currently-march.html">Farley's March Currently</a>. I think I am only number 500 something. Holy cow that girl is popular. Without further ado, my month.<br />

<br />
I've been slowly working through the <a href="http://www.teachingblogtrafficschool.com/teachingblogtrafficschool.com/MAL_Promo_Page.html">Teaching Blog Trafic School</a>. It helps me learn new tips to develop my blog and encourages me to sert goals. If you are just getting started on blogging I recommend it.<br />
<br />
I love being able to spend time outside. My little tomato plants are growing so quickly. I can't wait for summer and salsa.<br />
<br />
My house needs a good deep cleaning. Today we tackled the bathroom and kitchen. Next on my list is Baby's room.<br />
<br />
While I appreciate the extra daylight, daylight savings has not been kind to my sleep habits.<br />
<br />
I just bought a spiffy bike. (Thank you tax returns!) Now I need to buy a helmet and some shorts.<br />
<br />
I enjoy good movies. I love how music can change my day for the better, but I hate how hormones make my mood swing.<br />
<br />

I'm not talking Panda Express. Which Mr. Handsome loves to eat regularly. After working at Universal and having to see it every day for an entire summer I don't really think it qualifies. Since moving we have yet to find an amazing Chinese place. Looks like we will have to investigate or I might have to try my hand at making some. I bring this up because Chinese New Year was yesterday, February 10th this year. I love a good reason to celebrate. Even if I am a day late. :)<br />
<br />
How do you celebrate Chinese New Year in your classroom? I used to share books with my class and do a short lesson on the different animals associated with the Chinese Zodiac. This is the year of the snake.<br />
<br />
Here are two of my favorite books:<br />

My family usually called it <b>SAD</b>. Single Awareness Day. But then I met my husband and had a class of little second graders and my thoughts happily changed. While I realize Valentine's Day is popular for the over priced roses and chocolates that is not why I celebrate it. I celebrate it because it gives me the opportunity to express my love to others. (I will happily receive chocolate and roses on any other day. My husband knows not to get me them on Valentines. It is WAY too expensive.)<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
As you know, one of my favorite things is reading. I wanted to share some of my favorite books about love with you. Feel free to peruse them.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0689718721/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0689718721&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20"><img border="0" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0689718721&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0689718721" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />

I love the message this book shares. Expressing love and gratitude makes a huge difference.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div>
This book has adorable illustrations and explains different ways to hug. I can't wait to share it with my little man. This one went over a lot better with my second graders than <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0439208602/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0439208602&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">A Book of Kisses</a>. I like that one too, but it will make your kids silly.<br />

<br />
This book is a classic. It is perfect for illustrating similes You could even have the children write their own version for their parents or special valentines.<br />

I loved using the short poems in this to help with transitions, as a small reward, or even a short time filler. After reading it you could inspire the poets in your class to write a poem from a different animal's perspective.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://funforfirst.blogspot.com/2013/01/books-for-valentines-day-and-giveaway.html">Fun for First </a>also came up with an excellent list which you can find <a href="http://funforfirst.blogspot.com/2013/01/books-for-valentines-day-and-giveaway.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I love sharing books! And I really love <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2013/02/currently-february.html">Farley's Currently Parties</a>. Check out what is new in my world.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My husband fell in love with Imagine Dragons and I quickly followed suit. Listening to them makes me happy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've been fighting the rain recently. Right now the sun is shining and I am almost convinced to go for a walk.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I want to send some "love notes" to people who have made an impact on my life. If you were to write a note, who would you write?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We moved this summer and I still don't feel like I have found a new friend. I have several new acquaintances but no one who really fits. Blech. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The price of stamps went up. I need to buy some more one cent stamps so I can send off my love notes. Snail mail is so much more fun than digital. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I <b>HATE</b> comment verification forms. Why do they have to make the letters all squiggly? I almost always mess up. I promise I am human. I can't leave a fun comment if your comment guardian rejects me so many times I give it. Trust me. It happens. At least once a week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also <b>HATE</b> people who smoke next to children. You are ruining their lungs and setting them on the path to developing a terrible habit. Enough said.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How are you preparing for Valentine's day? Who are you planning on showering with love?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

But my blog has been so neglected, and I love parties where I can talk to people one on one or in small groups. (I am actually terrified of social events with too many people. Especially people I don't know.) Even though <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2012/12/currently-january.html?">Farley's party</a> is HUGE I still feel like there is a lot of personal connection. It must be the rule of three. I love that she inspires (and requires) people to visit and talk to each other.<br />
<br />
My January Currently:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSqmFJ2EJGDMg4D8NLnMiUzhp3XrmPjBhWq534EqprPcDJKW42ZAGweC4ek_g1iuf0u5cKBI8fkllqfNqCOSonp1G4IsmsTkjloBeplUVCi6iphpvgEdKDznVeRs5ESPK2FLvEX0UAWcDP/s1600/currentlyjan1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSqmFJ2EJGDMg4D8NLnMiUzhp3XrmPjBhWq534EqprPcDJKW42ZAGweC4ek_g1iuf0u5cKBI8fkllqfNqCOSonp1G4IsmsTkjloBeplUVCi6iphpvgEdKDznVeRs5ESPK2FLvEX0UAWcDP/s640/currentlyjan1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Right now I am the epitome of productive house wife. The dishwasher is going, <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/44543483786479766/">pumpkin chocolate chip cookies</a> are baking in the oven, my son is sleeping softly, and today things got dusted. I know. I dusted. You can hold the applause, I still have to fold the laundry. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My life has changed a lot in the past year, but I wouldn't change anything about it. Except maybe the pinched nerve in my back. That I could happily disappear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I meant to get to this linky party sooner. But life as a new mom is a little bit harder than everyone makes it seem. I don't know how people can have babies and work at the same time. I am just trying to keep my head above the water some days. The good news is next month is just around the corner. Maybe I might make it on time to February's party.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My little boy is an angel, but I would love for him to sleep in four hour chunks at night. Any advice from the Mom's out there on this?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am slowly working on decluttering our little apartment. Frankly there just is not enough space for everything. So somethings have to go. At the moment I have three bags to donate to charity and I am thrilled. But I know there are plenty more things that could be added to the pile.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Time.</b> I pondered other words. But this is the one I kept coming back too. I need to manage my time more effectively. I have so many things I would like to get done. And getting a lot of them half done is not quite the same as focusing on who/what is important.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I had to take a moment and express gratitude for all that I have been given. I truly could not ask for anything else this holiday season. My husband has a great job, we have food to eat, a roof over our head, and we received the best gift in November. I have a healthy baby boy! I hope you understand that I will be spending less time blogging and more time soaking up every precious moment.<br />

I will be back eventually. Happy fall everyone. Mrs. Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18420914503608188696noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-516452876454239228.post-3072126261072080032012-10-18T15:00:00.000-07:002012-10-18T15:00:01.202-07:00October ReadsI have been reading like a mad woman recently. It's one of the few things that I feel I can do comfortably as a nine month pregnant person. (At least before I fall asleep. I have the hardest time staying awake right now.) Recently this led to me finding all kinds of cool books. I've been meaning to share them with you, but then <a href="http://www.minds-in-bloom.com/2012/10/halloween-read-alouds.html">Rachel</a> shared her awesome <a href="http://www.minds-in-bloom.com/2012/10/halloween-read-alouds.html">post of Halloween Books</a> and I felt like I had missed the party. I felt it again when <a href="http://servingpinklemonade.blogspot.com/2012/10/monster-books.html">Amy</a> shared her favorite <a href="http://servingpinklemonade.blogspot.com/2012/10/monster-books.html">Monster Books</a>. Seriously, with so many talented bloggers out there how am I supposed to keep up?<br />
<br />
But I decided as long as I shared DIFFERENT books with you, you'd still pat me on the back and visit my blog again. Right? No. Hmmm. Well. At least I shared them with you and you have more options to look for in the future. Make sure you check out the two talented ladies above as well.<br />
<br />
My October Book Picks:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316789771/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0316789771&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20"><img border="0" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0316789771&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0316789771" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316789771/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0316789771&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Halloween</a>: This book is perfect for encouraging fine motor practice, creativity, and engaging fast finishers. I recommend getting a coy of the book, copying out your favorite step by step sequence and placing it in a center with scrap paper, stationary, and books/paper for story writing. Have students illustrate their stories, add pictures to letters, or just work on developing their fine motor and sequence.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0763633062/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0763633062&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20"><img border="0" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0763633062&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0763633062" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0763633062/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0763633062&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Andy Shane and the Pumpkin Trick</a>: This book would be perfect for an October read aloud. It is a smal chapter book with fun characters. Andy needs to stop the pumpkin smashers from destroying Halloween. Have your student's write their own solution before you finish reading the book.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BBS9AG/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000BBS9AG&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20"><img border="0" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B000BBS9AG&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000BBS9AG" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BBS9AG/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000BBS9AG&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Dr. Pompo's Nose</a>: You can't help but smile as you read this book. The pictures are amazing, the storyline is unique, and it lends itself perfectly to a writing activity. In the story one of the characters loses her nose. Other pumpkins who stumble upon it come up with all kinds of unique uses for it. Gather random items from around your home/classroom. Place them into a paper bag. Have each student reach in and come up with a new use for that item and write about it. Encourage them to be as creative as possible. Don't want to go around collecting 20+ items? (I don't blame you!) Have students work in small groups or write a story as a class. I think this would be a super cute class book if you took pictures of your students using whatever random object you decided to use in new ways.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1416979360/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1416979360&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20"><img border="0" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1416979360&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1416979360" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />

It is perfect for young picture readers. The only word in the entire book is "Boo!" The pictures add so much more depth to the story. Students will feel confident as they read the pictures and words.<br />
Working with older students who need to add more detail to their writing/illustrations? Read the book to them without showing them the pictures. It goes really fast. Then read it to them with the pictures. Explain how you can expand sentences to include more detail or add detail to illustrations in the text. Give each student a page to expand upon. Encourage them to use descriptive words, action verbs, and lots of details.<br />

<div>
I recently did a post about <a href="http://livelovelearnwithmrsl.blogspot.com/2012/10/common-core-vocabulary-part-1.html">introducing common core vocabulary</a> using books. You can read that post <a href="http://livelovelearnwithmrsl.blogspot.com/2012/10/common-core-vocabulary-part-1.html">here</a>. Today I would like to share some of the resources I found online about vocabulary instruction in the classroom. <br />

<br />
As I studied the Common Core one theme that seemed to reoccur often was <b>vocabulary</b>. Students are expected to <i>"build strong content knowledge"</i> across a <i>"wide range of subject matter."</i> They are expected to learn both <i>"general knowledge" </i>and <i>"discipline-specific expertise."</i> <span style="font-size: x-small;">(p. 7 ELACC) </span>Students are also expected to <i>"interpret words and phrases"</i> and be able to <i>"read and comprehend complex texts independently."</i> <span style="font-size: x-small;">(P. 10 ELACC)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div>
What does that mean to me as a teacher? It means I need to spend more time teaching my students how to understand words by context and provide them with opportunities to expand their vocabularies. This week I discovered a new book that I think would be perfect for introducing this concept.<br />
<br />
How many of you have heard of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061127590/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0061127590&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Big Words for Little People</a> by Jamie Lee Curtis?<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061127590/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0061127590&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20"><img border="0" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0061127590&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0061127590" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I actually love a lot of her books including: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060287616/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0060287616&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">I'm Gonna Like Me: Letting Off a Little Self-Esteem</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060245603/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0060245603&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day</a>. I love that her books introduce big words with kid friendly descriptions and fun illustrations.<br />
<br />
My favorite part of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061127590/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0061127590&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Big Words for Little People</a> is the introductory poem:<br />
<b>"I know some big words. I'll teach them to you. Although you are small, you can use big words too. Big words aren't scary. They're big fun to learn. I was taught once and now it's your turn."</b><br />
<br />
Children can learn big words. We just need to give them the opportunity. Need more great ideas on books that teach vocabulary? In an effort to understand more about it I am reading anything and everything I can about the subject. Some reviews of the Common Core are <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/post/a-defense-of-common-core-state-standards/2012/09/16/94b8f2fa-0072-11e2-b260-32f4a8db9b7e_blog.html">positive</a>. Some reviews are <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/post/eight-problems-with-common-core-standards/2012/08/21/821b300a-e4e7-11e1-8f62-58260e3940a0_blog.html">negative</a>. Some talk about the similarities and some the differences. But each article/post I read helps me develop a better idea of what exactly the Common Core means to me.<br />
<br />
Yesterday I read a <a href="http://helloliteracy.blogspot.com/2012/10/quarter-1-reflection-getting-on-with.html">post</a> by <a href="http://helloliteracy.blogspot.com/2012/10/quarter-1-reflection-getting-on-with.html">Hello Literacy</a>'s Jennifer Jones. (A Reading Specialist in North Carolina) She recently gave two amazing power points about integrating the common core to teachers. These power points and a a free questioning resource are included in <a href="http://helloliteracy.blogspot.com/2012/10/quarter-1-reflection-getting-on-with.html">her post</a>. If you too are still full of questions about the Common Core I highly recommend taking the time to pop over and reading her post.<br />
<br />
As I read, I took notes on the things that seemed important to me. I'd like to take a moment over the next week or so and talk about my impressions. My first impression? The Common Core is rigorous. It expects more of our students and more from our teachers. I love to see that it is moving towards making connections across curriculum and understanding why the things we learn are important. But I am also confused at the gaps in some of the standards. I love to see more of an emphasis on understanding text and moving to higher level thinking. But I am not always sure how to align that into my teaching.<br />
<br />
Please tell me I'm not the only one with questions. If I am, well you are just going to have to sit through several posts. I find that once I put my thoughts into words for another person I am able to see the holes in my thinking. So thank you for being my sounding board. I hope that you learn something too.Mrs. Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18420914503608188696noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-516452876454239228.post-16665980200574602202012-10-04T00:15:00.000-07:002012-10-04T00:26:14.331-07:00Currently and the Common Core<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love Fall! I wish that California understood the changes of the seasons. Unfortunately it is still warm here and the leaves are refusing to change colors. In Utah we would be sleeping with our windows open under nice thick blankets. Here in California we are camped in front of the AC or a fan. At least I don't have to deal with snow right?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On to my life currently. If you haven't heard of <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2012/10/currently-october-for-classroom-and-you.html">Farley's Monthly Currently Parties</a> you are in for a treat. Each month she asks teachers around the world what is current in their lives. I love reading about my friends and sharing a little bit more about my little piece of the world.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
My husband and I are sitting next to each other on our respective computers plugging away. He is programming and I am catching up on blogs, pinterest, facebook, and politics.<br />
<br />
Today (or is it yesterday since it is after 12?) I finished two new projects. I am so proud of myself. I even aligned them to the <a href="http://www.corestandards.org/">common core</a>. I'm still trying to learn more about implementing the common core. <a href="http://helloliteracy.blogspot.com/2012/10/quarter-1-reflection-getting-on-with.html">This post</a>, by Hello Literacy and the power points it contains are my new homework. I plan on learning a bit more and hopefully creating two more things before the week is up.<br />
<br />
I need to learn more about politics, but I'm not sure where to start. Anyone have some pointers?<br />
<br />
I am making slow progress on my son's nursery. We bought his crib and I started washing 0-3 clothes and putting them in his dresser. I'm excited and a little overwhelmed. Apparently we have a million size 1 diapers and only one package of newborn. Do people just think my baby is going to be chunky? I can understand. I guess. I have kind of "popped" in the last week or so.<br />
<br />
Is it ever not a good time to eat a piece of pie? I have had the munchies all day long. I think I might just have to cave and bake myself a pie tomorrow. (Though I might end up eating it all myself and my doctor will chastise me. I've already decided not to tell her about the ENTIRE carton of cookie dough ice cream that has disappeared in the last month.) Anyone volunteer to help me eat a pie? No? Maybe I will stick with the pile of fresh fruit I have been rationing. I love fresh apples, oranges, grapes, and bananas!<br />
<br />
Picking just one book is hard. So look forward to my comprehensive list of favorite fall books in the near future. I can't wait!<br />
<br />

I recently had the opportunity to see both of them and wanted to share my thoughts with you. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I saw the first a couple of weeks ago, "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1648179/">Here Comes the Boom.</a>" </span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The synopsis listed on IMDb says, "<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">A high school biology teacher looks to become a successful mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to prevent extra-curricular activities from being axed at his cash-strapped school." I do not generally like Kevin James' movies, but I will have to make an exception here. I thought the movie was fun, inspiring, and worth telling others about. </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I loved that Mr. Voss (Kevin James) did not start off the movie as an idealistic teacher who ended up sacrificing everything he has. (Anyone remember Freedom Writers?As a teacher I love the message that one person can change a lot, but I hated the fact that she had to loose everything in order to do so. I think there can be a balance.) Mr. Voss starts the movie as a burnt out former teacher of the year. While his motives to finance the schools extra-curricular activities do not start out with the students in mind, that is what drives him in the end. He was inspired to change his teaching and inspire his students.</span></span><br />

<br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The synopsis, "</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">Two determined mothersĀ, one a teacher, look to transform their children's failing inner city school. Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy, they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children." I liked and hated this movie all at the same time. While I think it is worth seeing, I was disappointed in how teachers and unions were represented.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">The message of this movie is true. We can change education for the better! Every child deserves to learn and there are parts of our school system that are broken. But I can't say for</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"> sure that destroying unions is going to fix that</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">I know that there are schools where teachers and students have lost hope. I know of teachers who lost their love of children and teaching, but continued onward in order to reach their </span></span><span style="line-height: 18px;">retirement</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"> goals. I know of teachers who should have been fired, but weren't. But I also know of countless teachers who are striving daily to help their students. (Hello, you just need to look at the teacher bloggers out there.) I know of good union leaders who want what is best for students and teachers. </span></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 18px;"><b>What do you think?</b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 18px;"><b><br /></b></span>

My husband is convinced that I should quit teaching and go to graphic design school. I think teaching is a much better bet. My older and younger sister? Man are they crafty. They would rock at graphic design. Which is probably why one studied art history and the other studied advertising and photography. Me? I'm convinced that I have very few artistic bones in my body.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But I do like to create things. And sometimes when you create things it is helpful to know what colors go well together. Growing up I assumed that if it was all one color it was ok. Imagine a girl with braces, glasses, and her nose in a book, wearing all different shades of blue. Yes that was me. My little sister always tried to catch me before I went out the door.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyways. Creating things means I need help with my colors. Enter is my brilliant friend's suggestion. <a href="http://www.colourlovers.com/">Colour Lovers</a>. Yes, it is spelled funny. Crazy Brits! But boy do I love it. And it is free. One of my favorite words.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can go on, create your own colors, color palettes, or patterns. Sounds a little intense? Don't be scared. I managed to do it. And if it becomes too much you can just borrow someone else's palette, pattern, or color. There are tons and tons to look at and choose. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjliOWrCQnGT-HJkJT8yMVvU6nu5fFLbzjRHIaTsf1LtZspSiap_yL7XWq1-MZGVJmRLR5wd21vbQUPHPJN6gA-2mg5zJhQO9i1-CGiMNFo5OYO5aYWv7sbljpXHiJYUYZEF6mTzD8vjbw/s1600/Screen+Shot+2011-09-13+at+11.19.31+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjliOWrCQnGT-HJkJT8yMVvU6nu5fFLbzjRHIaTsf1LtZspSiap_yL7XWq1-MZGVJmRLR5wd21vbQUPHPJN6gA-2mg5zJhQO9i1-CGiMNFo5OYO5aYWv7sbljpXHiJYUYZEF6mTzD8vjbw/s400/Screen+Shot+2011-09-13+at+11.19.31+PM.png" width="153" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Why I bring this up?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
How many of you have ever used <a href="http://www.wordle.net/">Wordle</a> before? It is an awesome program where you type in a list of words or a full story and it automatically turns them into a beautiful word cloud. Like this: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWvjnks8oKkj9dy-7ZmvwE9sir51csxN4VgJc1HC5-SqwljVVo4rYGKk-VD2K2tX9fX1yJfM0lNvq0NE1RgJWJ-lCnUatdsfVIepxc5JanJ3vpESGHsMUoWNDiIrCVR-0y6rTpHIOv4Qo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2011-09-13+at+11.15.57+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWvjnks8oKkj9dy-7ZmvwE9sir51csxN4VgJc1HC5-SqwljVVo4rYGKk-VD2K2tX9fX1yJfM0lNvq0NE1RgJWJ-lCnUatdsfVIepxc5JanJ3vpESGHsMUoWNDiIrCVR-0y6rTpHIOv4Qo/s320/Screen+Shot+2011-09-13+at+11.15.57+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But to be honest, sometimes it is not nearly as cute. Which is where <a href="http://www.colourlovers.com/">colour lovers</a> comes in. You can make a custom palette and then use those colors in Wordle to make truly amazing posters.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You start with the regular create button and then the real magic happens. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Click on color, scroll down past all the set palettes and hit edit custom palette.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://www.corestandards.org/">Common Core</a> is the new buzz word in United States Education. Students and teachers alike are being held to higher standards. Since it is a relatively new concept, it is sometimes hard to find support or resources. Two weeks ago, I posted about a review about a resource for Kindergarten*. This week I wanted to post about a resource for <a href="http://corecommonstandards.com/core-curriculum/first-grade-common-core-workbook/">First Grade Common Core</a> teachers and parents.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghzh5XVfayMDAQMZX2kWOcUOHiXZML-1mu7bintNc34pJoXW_5xDKEt8agz__o2Zagkc_uvbu9Kp4pdcxRMCG8c0lvdxCfYhVAKK9hxvcpMrIMlVTcqfhJ1t7DDLVUP35TIbv9VuCW1wQ/s320/first-grade-common-core-standards-workbook.png" width="320" /></div>
<br />
This book is full of worksheets and activities for all <a href="http://corecommonstandards.com/core-curriculum/first-grade-common-core-workbook/">First Grade Common Core</a> Math and English standards. My favorite part is the table of contents. It lists each standard with page numbers for a unique activity. I downloaded the <a href="http://corecommonstandards.com/core-curriculum/first-grade-common-core-workbook/">free preview</a> (Click on the free preview link. Look for the orange link at the end of the description.) It had a lot of cute, kid friendly ideas and worksheets similar to what you might find on Teachers Pay Teachers. (Another great resource for those tackling the CC.) I also saw worksheets that would be challenging for First Grade students.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBu4EieBt4IvM6u1Xxvotb0wNBw7sv0A-BrL7VFkwxbdjomDjj_3sQXoiIsWXAE6noy5gkOu6ix0ovBizgT62zvbVSSTgevkzvLU3Ar9IlxvqyWkwa_CD8cf3kcjK3KBsCObtUdY9H2Nk/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-09-28+at+10.23.13+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBu4EieBt4IvM6u1Xxvotb0wNBw7sv0A-BrL7VFkwxbdjomDjj_3sQXoiIsWXAE6noy5gkOu6ix0ovBizgT62zvbVSSTgevkzvLU3Ar9IlxvqyWkwa_CD8cf3kcjK3KBsCObtUdY9H2Nk/s400/Screen+Shot+2012-09-28+at+10.23.13+AM.png" width="312" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The book costs $39.99. While I realize that is a bit steep for someone on a teacher's budget I think it might be helpful for those of you who want to learn more and need some guidance. You will have to look for yourself and decide if purchasing this book is right for you.<br />

I have to say it is my favorite season. I get to wear jeans and warm sweaters as I watch the leaves change on the few trees that resist the California message that it is summer all year. (I admit Utah does do fall better, but it's winter is not my favorite.) I love pumpkin bread, pumpkin steamers, and pumpkin pie. (Do you sense a theme here?) I love soup season and cold nights snuggled down in a blanket. I wish that fall started sooner and lasted longer.<br />
<br />
How do you prepare for fall? This last week I bought a decorative pumpkin and turkey at Target. Best $5 I spent this week! They make me smile every time I look at them. This week I also started breaking out my tried and true soup recipes. <a href="http://wellbalancedwife.blogspot.com/2012/08/bacon-hater.html">Mom's Homemade Chowder</a>, <a href="http://wellbalancedwife.blogspot.com/2012/09/white-bean-chicken-chili.html">White Bean Chicken Chili</a>, and <a href="http://whowantsdinner.blogspot.com/2009/06/lion-houses-creamy-chicken-noodle-soup.html">Lionhouse Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup</a> will be staples in my home for the next couple of months.<br />
<br />
I have been racking my brain for a good couples costume idea for Halloween. Anyone already know what they will dress up as? I'm struggling. Any ideas for a someone who will be almost 9 months pregnant? No? Yeah. Me either.<br />
<br />
In case you missed the subtle hint above, I love Fall and all that comes with it. I love sharing this excitement with my friends, family, and the children in my life. Because I love you all so much, I decided to share some <i><b>free fun fall</b></i> ideas. Let me know if you have some that you would like to add to the list.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J4WNL2/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B004J4WNL2&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20"><img border="0" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B004J4WNL2&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=liwimrl-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B004J4WNL2" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> </div>

<br />
<br />
I put it on hold at the library and waited until I got an email telling me it had arrived. Am I the only one who anxiously waits for new books? New books and book shopping are better than clothes in my opinion. I am a little "unique" and I understand that.<br />
<br />
<b>Has anyone else read this? </b>I loved it! It did take me a while to finish because it has tons of references to studies and research that take a little more concentration to understand. (And my pregnant brain struggles staying on task. Having to visit the ladies room <i>all the time</i> might have something to do with that.)<br />
<br />
I am an introvert. I do best in small settings of people I know and recharge with quiet evenings at home reading and blogging. I struggle with new things or disagreements. I listen and tend to analyze interactions and relationships. (Often when my husband and I are out together I have to explain why I am giggling. You see and hear the silliest things when you people watch. Please tell me I am not the only one. Am I?) Sometimes I feel like a mouse in a world full of beautiful and talkative birds.<br />
<br />

<br />
Upon finishing the book, I thought Cain's insights were intelligent and relevant to me as a person and as an educator. Our modern society places a <b>strong emphasis</b> on extroverts. This can be seen in business, society, and even in our classrooms. Think about terms like "<i>class participation, cooperative learning, group work, presentations, defending your argument, and tables</i>." Right now in education there is a huge emphasis on cooperative learning. This can be a good thing, as long as it is used in moderation. (Remember you have introvert students too!) I got so frustrated with my last year of college, because it seemed that every assignment in my major was a group project. People have different time frames, ideas, and plans for a final product. It made me want to pull out my hair. I felt I could have learned more, finished faster, and been less frustrated if I had been able to work on my own at least part of the time. I'm not the only one who felt that way. <a href="http://www.minds-in-bloom.com/2012/09/cooperative-learning-from-students.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MindsInBloom+%28Minds+in+Bloom%29">This is an article</a> from a current junior about her feelings on "cooperative learning."<br />

<br />
Remember your introverts and your extroverts as you plan lessons and assessments. As I read <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307352145/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0307352145&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0307352145" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> I took notes. What good reader doesn't stop to make connections and highlight important ideas? (Don't worry I didn't use a real highlighter in a library book, just <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006JNMH/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00006JNMH&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">post-its</a>.)<br />
<br />
Here are somethings I learned that I want to remember in my classroom:<br />
<ul>
<li>Encourage natural passions. It is the little boy who loves reading about marine animals who will be a great scientist. Get books on all kinds of subjects. (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1426307934/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1426307934&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">National Geographic</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0823412385/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0823412385&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Gail Gibbons</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/160320184X/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=160320184X&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Time for Kids</a>, etc.)</li>
<li>Teach children that it is ok to be different. (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060287616/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0060287616&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">I'm Gonna Like Me</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0152020136/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0152020136&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">I Like Myself</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0399234160/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0399234160&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon</a>, etc.)</li>
<li>Teach children how to communicate in small groups, in front of people, and one on one. These are skills they need to pick up before they head off to the business world.</li>
<li>Give and teach students roles in group projects. Keep groups small in number. (2-3) Maintain a good balance between independent and group work.</li>
<li>Teach children that a lot of people are terrified of new things. (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1580890547/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1580890547&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">First Day Jitters</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0688170277/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0688170277&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Wemberly Worried</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0618254064/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0618254064&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">Something Might Happen</a>, etc.) Take it slowly. Build up to bigger problems.</li>
<li>Teach them it is ok to pretend to be bold. But to remember what makes you comfortable and find a balance in your life.</li>
</ul>

That means that I got to explore my local bookstore yesterday. One of my favorite things to do in a bookstore is peruse new titles and find new books to add to my collection. Yesterday I focused on pirate books.<br />
<br />
<div>
Some of the ones that I fell in love with:</div>
<br />
<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/swflash.cab" height="175px" id="Player_323e41ec-2adf-4eb0-a4ac-47bc070eb186" width="500px"> <param NAME="movie" VALUE="http://ws.amazon.com/widgets/q?rt=tf_cw&ServiceVersion=20070822&MarketPlace=US&ID=V20070822%2FUS%2Fliwimrl-20%2F8010%2F323e41ec-2adf-4eb0-a4ac-47bc070eb186&Operation=GetDisplayTemplate"><param NAME="quality" VALUE="high"><param NAME="bgcolor" VALUE="#FFFFFF"><param NAME="allowscriptaccess" VALUE="always"><embed src="http://ws.amazon.com/widgets/q?rt=tf_cw&ServiceVersion=20070822&MarketPlace=US&ID=V20070822%2FUS%2Fliwimrl-20%2F8010%2F323e41ec-2adf-4eb0-a4ac-47bc070eb186&Operation=GetDisplayTemplate" id="Player_323e41ec-2adf-4eb0-a4ac-47bc070eb186" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" name="Player_323e41ec-2adf-4eb0-a4ac-47bc070eb186" allowscriptaccess="always" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" align="middle" height="175px" width="500px"></embed></OBJECT> <noscript><a HREF="http://ws.amazon.com/widgets/q?rt=tf_cw&ServiceVersion=20070822&MarketPlace=US&ID=V20070822%2FUS%2Fliwimrl-20%2F8010%2F323e41ec-2adf-4eb0-a4ac-47bc070eb186&Operation=NoScript">Amazon.com Widgets</A></noscript>
<br />
<br />
I think <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/031236928X/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=031236928X&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">A Pirate's Guide to First Grade</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=liwimrl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=031236928X" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />is my favorite. It is full of fun pirate phrases. It is perfect for introducing the concept of context clues. Don't worry. There is a glossary in the back for all you land lubbers. ;)<br />
<br />
My favorite non-fiction book was <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0531163687/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0531163687&linkCode=as2&tag=liwimrl-20">You Wouldn't Want to Be a Pirate's Prisoner!: Horrible Things You'd Rather Not Know </a>. It is an exciting and scary time for teachers every where. Teachers are revamping lessons, finding new resources online, and creating a better learning environment for their students. Whenever I find an amazing resource for teaching Common Core I try to share it with others. You may have seen this one taking bloggers by storm recently:<br />
